Yassmeene Saleh

Yassmeene is a journalism graduate from the American University in Dubai with experience in writing, activism, and humanitarian work. She wishes to refine her storytelling skills to highlight untold stories and the role of education for those living in the UAE and in her home country, Lebanon.

“I have always been impressed with the UAE’s treatment of people with disabilities. It promotes their social inclusion, rights and access to opportunities to a great extent, paving the path for them to lead their own lives with dignity. I wanted a positive and hopeful story that can show children with disabilities thriving with the right care and support, which is why I chose Melia’s story. She has Down syndrome, she shines in whatever pathway she chooses due to her mother’s unrelenting support and love for her and thanks to access to inclusive education. She makes friends in her school; learns alphabets, the names of colours, shapes and animals and expresses herself uniquely – as any child of her age does.

Melia’s story serves as a model of hope and testament for what accessible education and persistent support can bring forward. Her presence in these classrooms also teaches her peers how to embrace differences with empathy and respect, and the chance to witness her abilities through a broader lens that celebrates people’s unique lived experiences through listening, sharing and connecting.”
